Assign money

Use the Budget page: assign money to categories, use quick actions and organize your categories.

The Budget page

The Budget page has two parts:

  • Totals: a table with one column for each currency. It shows Cash, In categories and Ready to budget for all of your accounts. A ≈ column can show an estimate in one currency.
  • Categories: each category, in its group, with Assigned, Spent and Available. A category that holds more than one currency shows one line for each currency.

Warnings show below the totals, for example when an account has more assigned than it holds.

All time or this month

Above the categories, All time shows everything you assigned and spent since you started. This month shows only what you assigned and spent in the current calendar month. Available always shows the running total, because money you did not spend stays in the category. The page remembers your choice.

Assign money to a category

  1. In the Assigned column of the category, select the amount. If the category is new, select Assign money.
  2. In From account, select the account that gives the money. Each account shows its own Ready to budget, and the list starts on one that has some.
  3. In Total assigned from this account, type the new total, or the change with a sign in front, such as +10000 or -2500.
  4. Make sure that Date is correct. Usually, this is today.
  5. Select Save.
The assign editor below the Groceries category, with From account, Total assigned from this account and Date.

You can also select ⋯ on the category row, and then Assign money. This opens the same form in a dialog. The dialog shows how much is available in the account now.

The field can also do simple sums with + and -, such as 12000+3500. A sign at the start changes what is assigned now; without one, the result is the new total. Before you save, the form shows the new total and what is left in Ready to budget. The result cannot be below zero.

To take money back from a category, type a smaller total, or a minus sign and the amount to take back. The difference goes back to the account's Ready to budget. Assigning money does not move money between accounts. The account balances stay the same.

See where a category's money comes from

Select the name of a category. The row opens and shows:

  • Spent per month: a bar chart of the last 12 months, one for each currency the category uses. The lighter bar is this month so far, and the dashed line is the average of the complete months. Show as table lists the same numbers.
  • One line for each account that gives money to the category, with its Assigned, Spent and Available.
  • Assignment history: each change to what you assigned, latest first.
  • See its transactions: a link to all the transactions in this category.
The Groceries category opened: Everyday account gives HUF and Salary account gives EUR, each with Assigned, Spent and Available.

Reports

Reports, in the menu, is part of Plus. Each currency gets its own chart, and nothing is converted except net worth.

  • Money in and out: for each of the last 12 months, the money that came in above the line and the money that went out below it, with a dot for the difference. Transfers between your accounts, conversions, opening balances and reconciliation adjustments are left out. A refund in a category lowers what went out.
  • Where the money went: your categories ranked by what you spent in them, for this month, last month, the last 3 months or the last 12 months. Money out with no category shows as Uncategorized. Select a name to see its transactions.
  • Net worth: the cash in all your accounts at the end of each month, as an estimate in your display currency at that day's exchange rates. A month with no stored rates is left out.

Point at a bar or a point to see its numbers, or open Show as table under a chart.

Cover overspending

If you spend more than a category has, its Available is less than zero. The app shows Overspent next to the amount.

You must cover overspending in the same currency. Money in another currency cannot pay it. To cover it, assign more money from an account in that currency. Or use the Cover overspending quick action.

Uneven accounts

A category keeps track of what each account gave it and spent from it. If one account spends more than it gave, while another account still has money in the category, the total can be fine but the app shows Uneven next to Available. Open the category to see which account is short.

For example, you give Dining 10,000 from your bank account and 10,000 from a meal card, then spend 15,000 with the bank card. Dining has 5,000 left, but the bank account is 5,000 short and the meal card still holds 10,000. Until you fix it, the bank account's Ready to budget counts that 5,000 as free money. The Rebalance accounts quick action moves 5,000 of the meal card's money in Dining over to the bank account. Dining still has 5,000 left, now all on the meal card.

Use quick actions

Quick actions assign money to many categories in one step. You see a preview before anything changes.

Cover overspending
Assigns money to each overspent category. The money comes from Ready to budget in the same currency. The accounts that the money was spent from go first.
Rebalance accounts
For each uneven category, moves unspent money from the accounts that still have some to the account that spent more than it gave, in the same currency. The category's total stays the same. The short account's Ready to budget goes down, the others' go up.
Repeat last month
Gives each category what it got last month, from the same accounts. It subtracts what the category already got this month.
Use 3-month average
Gives each category its average monthly amount from the last three months. It subtracts what it already got this month.
Fund targets
Shows when a category has a monthly target. Gives each category what its target still needs this month: the target, minus what the category already got this month. See monthly targets.
Fix Ready to budget
Shows only when an account has more assigned than it holds. It takes unspent money back from categories, largest amounts first, until Ready to budget is zero.

To use a quick action:

  1. On the Budget page, below Categories, select the quick action. To use it for one category only, select ⋯ on the category row, and then the quick action.
  2. Read the preview. It shows each change, and Ready to budget before and after.
  3. If you want a different date for the changes, change Assign on. Then select Update preview.
  4. Select Save. The button shows how many changes it saves.
The Repeat last month preview: changes by category and account, and Ready to budget now and after saving.

If an account does not have enough Ready to budget, the preview tells you which category stays short. Nothing changes until you save.

Set a monthly target

A monthly target is how much a category needs each month, for example 300 EUR for groceries or 150,000 HUF for rent. It is in one currency, the one you pay the bill in.

  1. Open the category on the Budget page.
  2. Under Monthly target, type the Amount per month and pick the Currency. Then select Add target. To change it later, edit the amount and select Save target.

The open category then shows how much you assigned this month and how much is still needed. Fund targets assigns the rest for one category, or for every category with a target from the quick actions. Money left over from earlier months stays in the category, but it does not count toward this month's target. To stop, select Remove target.

Change your categories

Add a category

  1. On the Budget page, select Add category.
  2. In Category name, type a name.
  3. Optional: in Group, choose a group or type the name of a new group.
  4. Select Create category.

Rename, move or delete a category

  1. Select ⋯ on the category row.
  2. Select Rename, Move or Delete.

Move puts the category in a different group or a different position. You can delete a category only if nothing was ever assigned to it or spent from it. This keeps your history correct.

Work with groups

  • To add a group, select Add group.
  • To rename a group or change its position, select ⋯ on the group row. Then select Rename, Move up or Move down.
  • To delete a group, first move all of its categories to other groups.
